He was amazed at how quickly and efficiently she worked; even after months of not being in his OR she’d still retained most (if not all) of the information he’d implanted into her brain during multiple lessons. While he watched her skilled fingers flit over Heather Conners’ brain, Derek was overcome with emotion. He was proud of her, proud that she was his wife, proud at how hard she’d been working to regain his trust. Although it was completely there yet, Derek was a firm believer that if he kept working at it slowly, they could be there soon. “Good,” he murmured, watching Meredith control the bleeding easily, like she’d been doing it every second of her life. Neuro came easily to her, and it made Derek’s heart ache that he was the one keeping her away. But what could he do? How did he know Meredith wasn’t going to do something rash again because her heart told her to do so? Seeing things in black and white was something Derek struggled with, wrestling with it on nights with little sleep. He wanted Meredith back in neuro, and yet he didn’t. It was all confusing and mentally exhausting at the same time. He didn’t know how to keep going on like this; it’d be easier to make a decision. But he couldn’t tell himself that she was out for good, and yet he couldn’t allow her back either. Derek knew he would just have to slowly work at it, until he reached a conclusion.
She finished the procedure like she was breathing, and after he watched her close as well, leaving perfect and tiny stitches in Ms. Conners’ brain, Derek placed his hands together as he began his applause. He watched for Meredith to turn and meet his eyes, smiling underneath his mask as the whole OR joined in in applause. They were hitting new ground. Leaning forward, Derek gave her a kiss through their surgical masks to show just how proud of her he really was. The applause lasted a good few minutes, until Derek’s hands began to sting slightly from the intensity and fervor he tried to keep in every clap. Eventually, the applause died down, Derek finishing with the last clap that resonated through the OR. Signaling for the nurses to clean up and wake Heather up from surgery, he headed back into the scrub room to scrub out. “I was so proud of you today,” he let himself say, smiling his McDreamy smile at Meredith as the water once again rushed over his skin. “You were… you were brilliant in there,” he told her, reaching over to give her hand a squeeze. He let his hand linger there over hers, until he leaned over suddenly and met her mouth in an intense kiss. He didn’t know how else to apologize for the way he’d treated her after the Alzheimer’s trial, especially the night he’d spent at the unfinished McDream House, the night Zola had come back with them too. Maybe Janet thought Meredith was an irresponsible mother but he knew she wasn’t, and he knew that part of the reason why Janet had thought they were “separated” was because he’d spent the night somewhere else. He could never separate himself from Meredith, he knew that and he never had had any doubt about it.
Pulling away, Derek chuckled nervously. “Sorry,” he apologized, pulling his hand away to finish rinsing the soap off. He watched the water swirl down the drain before looking up again to meet Meredith’s eyes. “I just…” He shook his head, not knowing how to explain the passionate kiss he’d given her. “You’re amazing,” he finished simply, shutting off the water and grabbing a towel to dry his hands and arms with. “You’re simply amazing,” he smiled. “And I’m lucky you were the resident on my service today.” It wasn’t much, but it was a start, and he was glad about it too. He hadn’t expected to have such a romantic moment in the scrub room after Heather Conners’ surgery, but yet again he hadn’t expected for Meredith to be on his service today either. He hadn’t been expecting to work with her or even to let her fly solo on this surgery, but he was glad for all of it.
Meredith worked hard, remembering each step and detail perfectly as she focused on the patient’s brain tissue. It was incredible to her just how well she remembered everything, she’d not lost anything from her memory in the months since she’d been working with Derek, it was literally like riding a bicycle, or driving a car, once you knew how to do it, the techniques were never forgotten. Meredith had certainly missed this, losing all sense of everything else whilst she stared inside a woman’s brain, working meticulously and carefully to save her life. Sure, general surgery was good, she was following her mother’s legacy, but it wasn’t what she wanted to do, she didn’t lose herself in it as she did in neurosurgery. Here, she was away from everything, away from all the problems, escaping everything. Meredith was still reeling slightly from the fact that Derek had let her perform this surgery; after seeing how simple it would be stop the bleeding, she’d assumed that her husband would be in and out with no real problems, a quick surgery, to avoid the tangible awkwardness of them being in the OR together after so long. But no, he’d taken a step, a step with Meredith seriously thought was in the right direction towards having his entire trust, and that was comforting to her. It was like he was holding out his hand to her, to help her up, just a small gesture, but one that was a big deal to her.
She closed up carefully, pleased and feeling proud of herself for what she’d achieved. Meredith stepped back, a small smile on her face under her scrub mask at how well the procedure had gone; Heather Conner was going to be fine, there would still be emotional trauma from the accident but any physical trauma was now gone besides her recovery. She heard applause start behind her, and turned momentarily surprised to look at Derek, and saw him smiling at her. Her own smile reached her eyes, and she looked at him, happier than she’d been in a while. She felt an almost sense of exhilaration at having completed a neuro procedure, and seeing Derek looking at her like that, she could tell that this was a big step in the right direction for the two of them. After the applause ended, Meredith followed her husband out into the scrub room, her heart still racing from all the excitement. Meredith pulled the surgical mask off of her face, letting it hang round her neck as she ran her hands under the water, scrubbing out, and letting Derek speak. “It was a rush.” She said looking at him a little amazed. “Reminds me of my first time scrubbing in with you, on the rhythmic gymnast…I remember coming out of that surgery just feeling completely high, for lack of a better word.”
Meredith was a little taken aback as Derek moved over and met her lips in a passionate kiss, not that she was complaining what so ever, it was more the fact that they were in a scrub room. She was slightly reminded of times in the on call room, as well as a kiss from her intern year in the elevator and the prom night in the exam room. The latter was something she tried to forget though, she felt almost dirty that that had ever happened, even if so much had come from it in the end. She looked at Derek, her lips curving up into a smile. “You don’t have to apologise for kissing me.” She laughed a little, and turned back to continue washing her hands. Meredith let out a small happy sigh as Derek said she was amazing, and grabbed a towel, turning off the water, and leaning back against the giant sink as she towelled off her hands and arms. “I’m glad everything went okay.” She affirmed with a small nod. “It turned out to be a weirdly good stroke of fate, or bad planning by April with me ending up working with you.” Meredith grinned. “Thank you for letting me do that, in there, thank you Derek.”
